Wisdom in statements -

My father-in-law and I had many wonderful talks while I stayed with him. One day I was commenting about my on-going Vertigo, how I do seem to be doing better most of the time, yet I truly wish that it would just disappear from my life. The combination of the type of smile he was wearing with the sparkle in his eyes, told me he was thinking something and I really wanted to know what. So I pushed a little. Finally he said," that he thinks it's not so much that my vertigo has diminished, but rather that I have learned to adapt". He went on to say, "that there are two types of people; those that take "life" and learn to adapt to it so they can keep going on and doing things, and those whom not only throw themselves a pity party, but also choose not to come out of it."

So much wise truth in his words!

I had then got to thinking (and sharing with him) about the saying I 'oft quote from my "great grandma" (Dora Hawkins). "Age is a thing of the spirit. Now, some mornings you have to convince the body, but age IS a thing of the spirit." I have witnessed so much truth to her words over the years!

And then the saying Brian and I live by came to mind. "you can either laugh or cry at "life", we choose to laugh".

We (Dad and I) decided that those three statements go hand in hand with one another. I was humbled by his compliment and redetermined to keep striving forward to be the positive side of all three of the statements.

4 generations

So, I took this idea I came across on Pinterest, and with the guys cooperation, did this version of it.

Started out with this picture Benson had taken for me, of (then) 18 months old Elliot.
   2013/07-001

then Brian took this picture of Byron, holding the picture of his son Elliot.
    2013/07 - 002

then Benson took this picture of Brian, holding the picture of his son Byron, who was holding the pictue of Brian's GRAND son Elliot.
     2013/07 - 003

and we all love this picture of Grandpa 'Honey' (it so captures 'him' :->), holding the picture of his son Brian, holding the picture of g-pa's GRAND son Byron, holding the picture of G-pa's GREAT GRAND son Elliot.
     2013/07 - 004

Each time we took the pictures to Wal-Mart and had them made into 16 x 20 size prints (available under 'poster size prints')

The finished framed prints were 'Fathers Day' gifts to all the guys. Cyndi got a copy to hang in her house too.

We seem to have become the 'partying' type -

For the past month now, we've been 'partying' every weekend.
But the 'partying' actually started back on April 28th, when our nephew James married his Lauran.
            June 2012 # 047 - (sorry it's a little blurry)

Dear Boo had passed on May 5th. A short time later, Brent and Kayla adopted "Brain". A cute little puppy who was so fun to watch interact with Elliot!!! Brent named him "Brain", so that when people asked if he had a brain, he could answer 'yes'. :-p!   They had been told by the rescue place they adopted him from, that all of the little bumps on his head were 'puppy acne'. But it kept spreading, over more and more of his body. And the different vet's they called and asked advice from, never once mentioned the possibility of it being mange. Which is what the humane society diagnosed it as, when they took him there. The humane society also wouldn't let them keep the puppy, declaring 'animal cruelty', even though they had been doing ALL of the treatments that the other places had recommended they do. I had so-o been looking forward to Elliot and Brain growing up together...
               June 2012 - #084

On May 20th, the partying started up again, when Byron picked the kids back up. Within five minutes of them being here, we headed to the pond.
           A. -  #106   (Grammy has since purchased a larger sized swim suit for our growing girl :-D)
           E. -  #110

Sadly, two hours later when was Brian injured his Achilles Tendon. He is progressing well. He'd like to be "all better" right now. Then again, he gets to stay at home in front of a fan instead of being at work in this heat.

On May 27th, we attended the 80th birthday party for (our legal) Aunt Billie. Here is a picture of her with Grandpa "Honey" at James and Lauran's wedding.

June 10th, Cyndi and her family came to MI, to do their own little birthday party for Analyse. Different things we did while waiting for them to arrive -
#125 headed to the swings with Uncle Benson
        #128 playing with Poppa
#132 tossing stones into the creek
#138 learned to fly a kite

After they arrived, we ate. Then Analyse went swimming with her daddy, mommy and aunts and uncles.
#139 - Cyndi and Analyse. Grammy hadn't yet got a new suit and the old one was now too small.
        #146 - Auntie's Kayla and Emma
#147 - Auntie Emma's Steve and Uncle Brent
       #144 Uncle "Bubba"
While they swam, Elliot took a nap.
       #158
After swimming, Auntie Jammie said it was cake and presents time.

        #161

Elliot liked the brownie cake too!
           #177

The party we gave for Analyse, was on Saturday June 16th. I'm going to be doing a whole posting about it later. So for now, I'll just share but one picture. It's of Analyse and Byron during gift opening time.

Saturday June 23rd, we helped do the graduation open house for our neighbor Erin.

June 30th our niece Jenelle married Simon.
       2011 - 06 - 24 - random pictures        (This picture was copied off of Simon's mom's facebook pictures. THANKS Ranita ;->

I took this picture while we were waiting for other pictures to be taken. I found the shot irresistible ;->.

This past Friday (July 6th), we helped do the reception for Crystal's wedding. It was 107 degrees. 'Helped' as in, grilling chicken and vegetables and working in a small kitchen baking lasagna, heating sauce for the chicken, etc., then running in and out to keep the buffet filled, etc.. We couldn't keep pouring the water in us, as fast as it was sweating off of us. Right out loud we thanked God when he did send a small breeze our way.
Sorry, no pictures to share, at least yet. Might need to 'borrow' some from Crystal after she puts them on Facebook. It was a BEAUTIFUL outdoor wedding ceremony (wooden folding chairs out under the trees, facing a custom built arbor), with a custom built (by her father-in-law) greenhouse styled dining tent. Then dancing inside the beautiful wood lodge. Dreamy!

Next weekend is Elliot's first birthday party. :-D

After that?  Your guess is as good as mine.

Tulip wreath #1

In the last two days, I have made two different types of Spring Wreaths. I have the materials to make two more. The first two aren't for myself. One was for a friend. This one is for my father-in-law to hang on my mother-in-law's grave.
Mom LOVED decorating for any and every season or occasion!! And usually it was not just a couple of things here or there. No, no, no. You always knew what holiday it was, or which one was coming, once you entered her house. And often even before you entered. The front yard usually showed signs of it too.
So when I decided that I was going to make one of the wreaths I had found on Pinterest and really liked, I questioned Brian if I should make one for his mom's grave too. He got teary eyed and replied, "that'd be a good idea". Last Sunday when his dad was here, I questioned him about the idea. He too got all misty eyed and said, "she would have appreciated that".
Amy took me shopping on Thursday and I picked up the supplies. My brain was ever so fussy on Thursday... I am so-o thankful for Amy and how patient and protective she is of me! What a blessing of a friend!
My plan had been to go to one store and pick up the type of silk flowers I wanted. They didn't have them. Period. We found it strange that they didn't have any tulips. B-u-t, they did have these silk roses.. and they were on sale... That wreath is yet to be made. o;-p.
We went to another store. One where I often go to get silk flowers. They had them. By the boat load. But not a single type of their flowers were on sale. And I recoiled when reading their non sale prices. Bother!
Okay, I'll be brave and try a third store. They did have them, but at first I didn't think I was going to buy any. See, I wanted three specific colors of them. But it appeared as though all they had, were stems of them with more than one color flower on the stems. And none of the stems had only the color combinations I wanted. And no, I didn't want to change my color scheme. Turned out that whom ever had stocked their display case, had stuck them in so that all of the stems were mingled together. It took a bit of pulling and separating, but I was willing to do so to get only the colors I wanted!

Here's a link so that you can see the picture I had pinned of the wreath. Turned out that the 'trail' didn't lead back to a tutorial on how to make them, rather it went to a etsy shop where you could order one. "Okay then, you've made plenty of wreaths before. Your capable of winging this!" (I said to myself.)

I gathered the supplies together on the floor in the living room, turned on a show I wanted to watch, and got started.
First step was to divided the flowers in half, so that I didn't accidentally use too many on mom's wreath and not have enough left to make one for myself.
Second step was to use the wire cutters to cut each stem off of the bunch.
Third step is to start laying the flowers out around the wreath to see how I want the finished project to look.
A row of yellow tulips all the way around.
      A row of pink.
       A second row of yellow.
      A second row of pink.
Add in the purples here and there.
Take one single flower, wrap a cut piece of the metal wiring around it.
Wrap the wire around the metal wreath frame itself.
          Add a couple more flowers.
          And  a few more.
Sometimes you end up needing to lift some already wired on flowers up a bit so that you can wire more on.
Here's what it was starting to look like from the underside.
I got most all of the flowers attached all of the way around the wreath and got to the point where it looked like this.Hummm... What had she (the owner of the etsy shop) done?          Oh!  She had attached all of the flowers so they went in the same direction all the way around the wreath. I on the other hand, had all facing upwards. In other words, on both the right and left sides, the bulbs were facing upwards. The bulbs then met in the middle of the top and the stems were meeting in the center of the bottom. I got them as overlapping as I could on the bottom... but what should I do with the middle space?!!
I didn't have any appropriate ribbon on hand, so I couldn't just hide the area under a big bow.
I tried spreading the leaves out like this and tying them into place.
Humm, that doesn't look too good.
I tried adding a couple more flowers, after cutting their stems much shorter. But the wiring still showed.
I tried taking a single flower bulb and running some of the wiring through the middle of it.
To the end that was going to be inside the bulb, I made a big knot so that it wouldn't pull free.
What the inside then looked like.
Ran the other end of the wire up and around the wreath.
Then around the bulb and secured it.

I'm not showing you how that looked. Why not?  It looked so tacky I immediately removed it with out stopping to take a picture. Bother!

I tried a couple more ideas.....

In the end, I got the already attached leaves to lay just so, and hot glued the bottoms of them so they'd stay.
       The finished wreath.

Not sure what I'm going to do when I make the one for myself. Do I make the flowers go one direction around the wreath, or do I do it this way again? ....

The guys are headed down to dad's tomorrow on a particular errand. Hopefully they'll remember to take the wreath along.

All in all, I got through several shows during the course of making it. Yes, it might have gone a bit faster if I hadn't also been watching TV. On the other hand, not necessarily. See, my quick hand work on projects seems to have left my repartee of abilities, when I became 'Ms. Vertigo'. 8-/.  BUT, I refuse to just give up!

Elliot ;->

                                     Seven months old.

The last two mornings, I have heard something that definitely sounded like Elliot was awake and making noise. Upon hearing the sound, I smiled. But then my smiles turned upside down, when my brain reminded my heart, that the grand kids are again with their mom. It's not that I don't think they should spend time with their mom. It's just that it meant the sound I had heard, couldn't actually be Elliot. And I couldn't go get him and rejoice over the way he beams at me.
Yes, he beams at me. The beam does include a smile on his lips. And in his eyes. And all over his whole face. The boy sometimes literally beams with happiness. It's total awesomeness! Especially when what he's beaming at, is you!
Byron had met Cyndi and brought them back here on Thursday, Feb. 16th. I am so glad he did. Because it turned out that that was right when Elliot was ready to do a huge burst in his developing. And I got to witness all of it! :-D
The evening they arrived, I had sat him on the floor to see if he was sitting up on his own yet. Nope. Not even a half minute later he had toppled over. But before he left here on Sunday, he had progressed to sitting upright on his own for a good twenty five minutes. My bet is that he could last a lot longer. But usually by twenty minutes, he had had enough with sitting such and fallen over so he could do other things.
One 'other thing' was to wrestle his teddy bear. A friend Byron had attended school with, had dropped off gifts for both of his kids, during the last time they weren't here. Something about the teddy bear just screamed 'Elliot' at me, so I told Byron so. Man was I right. From the moment we gave it to him, he delighted in it! Sometimes he'd chew on a leg. Sometimes he'd fling it about. But often he would wrestle it. Literally! He'd roll over on top of it, pinning it's front legs down and then giggle with glee. So comical. So endearing. Amazingly awesome to both watch and listen to. "He's ONLY seven months old!" I stated, "How could he have already learned how to do that?" I questioned.
The answer seems to be, that our Elliot is 'pure boy'. Something he's just ingrained with.
Another example of that, came the afternoon and evening 'our' Kate visited. (Who by the way, seems to have been dubbed Analyse's BBF to the max!!! So-o cute!) Kate was sitting on the blue couch, holding and playing with Elliot. He soon made it clear he wanted down. Okay. But no, he didn't want sat on the floor. So she had him holding on to two of her fingers, standing between her legs. That's what he wanted! He started using his lips to sort of make a raspberry sound. And he kept going. And going. And going! And occasionally he'd lean way forward, then after a bit, way back. And usually before he leaned way back, his sounds would change and it literally sounded as though he was shifting gears! We all commented about it. And laughed. He looked around, beamed, chuckled, and went at it even harder. It was so-o-o comical! And cute! This went on for over fifteen solid minutes! Brian commented that he was afraid he was going to hyperventilate. ;-p But Elliot was having ever so much fun, as were those of us watching him, and attempting to converse with one another over the top of his sound effects. ;-b (And that wasn't the only time he did his revving engine noise and actions.)
That's another thing, Elliot is definitely a "B" boy ("B" standing for our last name). He can and does play quietly and contently for quite some time. But once he decides it's time to make noise, he only seems to know how to switch on the 'loud' volume controls. How that much volume, can come out of that size body, is quite the question! He also switches instantly to that volume setting when he's mad or crying. Mercy! Especially at 3 am. Shudder!
I previously told you about how accurate of a roller Elliot is. At the beginning of this last visit, I was curious to see if he was crawling yet. Nope. But by the time he left, he was 'army style' crawling at amazing speeds! I dare you to grab that thing he just spotted before he gets a hold of it! Chuckle. And he's really really close to out and out crawling too. He'd get up in formation, rock back and forth with vengeance, but right when we were sure he was going to take off crawling, he'd drop down and army style it again. One of these times, he's going to surprise even himself and out and out crawl. ;-p
Or just start walking. He loved it when I would let him stand against the edge of a couch, while I was sitting beside him on the floor. He'd bounce. He'd dance. He'd stretch to see what he could reach. All usually without falling. Occasionally though, his legs would give out and down he'd go in a huge hurry, giving no prior warning. The 'loud' button would then be hit!
Several times, while laying on the floor, he tried pulling himself up by grabbing a hold of the side of the couch. Won't be long till he accomplishes it! We have this lidded, round, five gallon pail, that the guys use in the living room as a moveable cup, TV remotes holder. Elliot almost accomplished pulling himself up to standing by grabbing the rim of that. He got ninety percent of the way there several times. Notice was served to not leave things on it unattended!
When he is sitting playing for periods of time, he can bend himself in half and stretch to reach things. Even when his legs are spread a huge distance apart, causing the grown men in the room to cringe at the feat. "That won't last long", they comment. :-p. The wonder part to me, is how he calmly sits straight up again. One time he almost got himself sitting up after army style crawling. So-o-o close...
Elliot also has quite the throwing arm on him! Mercy! How he can throw a rubber ducky clear across the living room, at his age and size, is beyond me. But throw it he can! Even his teddy bear, which is heavier and bulkier, went almost the whole distance at times. "Beware of flying objects".
Grandpa 'Honey' (one of Elliot's great grandpa's) was shaking his head (with it's teary eyes) and marveling how much Elliot reminded him of a young Brandon. In looks. In build. In abilities. "No denying his family ties", he kept commenting.
When Elliot arrived, we were told that they thought he was teething. It definitely felt like a tooth was coming up out of the bottom gum. "Or is it two?". It was two! Adorable little side by side white teeth, in the middle of the front of his lower gums. Before he left, he'd started drooling and spitting again. "Are you getting more teeth?" I questioned. My finger felt two more bumps on the outside of the upper gum. But it also came out bearing marks of those two bottom teeth. Yikes! He laughed.
He's been gone two days and I'm really missing him! One of the perils of grand parenthood.
Just a reminder, I do not do these postings about my grand children's developing, as a form of bragging. The reason I do them is two fold. One, to share with my friends what's going on in my life. And two, so that I can document their life's and print it off to give to them later in life, perhaps shortly before their weddings?
    One last picture....
My Mr. Elliot, what a blessing you are!!!  I LOVE you!
