the tree had been my friend

At 12:10, while I was talking to Brian on the phone during his lunch break Friday, I suddenly heard this loud boom/thud type noise. I rushed and looked out the front door, but saw nothing. 'Weird'. Not ten minutes later the phone rang, it was my neighbor Chris. "Have you seen your tree?" "Which tree?" "The one along the alley" "I head something a few minutes ago and looked out the front door, but didn't see anything." He chuckled and told me to come to my door. "Which door?" "Your back door". I did. Chris was standing on the little platform next to out small porch, looking towards the alley. I stepped out beside him, and gasped. I guess the noise I had heard, was the trees tap root snapping.
This picture was taken while I was standing near our parking spots in the alley.
                                                      (F.P. + Tree 202)

The tree had literally uprooted, the extreme strong winds we had had the night before had been it's literal down fall.
                                                (F.P. + Tree 203)

I told Chris to stay there a minute and I rushed in and grabbed the phone. Chris thought I was calling the neighbors, who's parking spot the tree was 'too close for comfort' to. Nope, I was calling Brian. He only had 5 minutes left of his lunch break. "The tree fell... .. ... I need you to come home!"  I had awaken with quite a migraine that morning, it hadn't subsided much and I was very fuzzy brained. Dealing with all of the phone calls that were going to need to be made, figuring out how to get this handled without costing us a fortune... I needed help.
While Chris went to personally tell the other neighbors, I started moving stuff to block the alley. There was no way I wanted somebody who cuts through our alley, deciding that they could fit under there and end up having a bigger problem on our hands.
                                                      (F.P. + Tree 205)

We moved the neighbors car safely out and into our then empty parking area. When Brian got home, he called Consumer's Energy while I called our home insurance company.  The power lines were barely above the neighbors garage roof. The lady at the power company said that she was going to list them as laying on the roof, that would move it up the priority list. We knew that in reality, it wouldn't be long before they were! Brian then called the city's non-emergency number. While talking to the guy he suddenly realized, 'I know that voice'. "Mary?" "Yes sir, my name is Martin D.... " "It's Brain B." Marty was going to send a fire truck by, "just to double check everything".  "Does he remember my aversion to fire trucks?!!" I asked Brian. He chuckled.
While looking the situation over, one of the firemen turned to Brian and said, "Somebody was looking out for you, if those two wires had been pulled together, instead of separated when the tree landed on them, they would have most likely started a fire." While we hadn't yet realized that part, we had known God had spared us greatly. If the tree had leaned towards the house instead of the alley, there would have been great damage. If the tree had broken apart while falling over, the neighbors car would have been totaled. If somebody had been driving through the alley at that moment... . THANK-YOU LORD!
                                                       (F.P. + Tree 204)
                                                        (F.P. + Tree 206)

The Firemen had gotten out their yellow tape to tape off the area, but then decided that the blockades I had put up would probably be more effective. :-]

More of the base of the tree.
                                                      (207)
                                                           (208)

Consumers Energy was there so fast we were really surprised!
                                                                 (209)
                                                           (211)
                                                  (212)

They got all of the tree onto the ground.
                                                         (214)
                                                            (213)
                                                                      (217)

Then they left, stating they had notified the city that they needed to come do the clean up. We hoped they wouldn't wait till Monday. We were amazed just how fast they showed up. A couple of big trucks, one puling a trailer with a bob cat on it.
                                                                (220)

Brian came in for a bathroom break and they had it done before he got back out. As they were lifting one big piece into the back of the truck, we saw just how rotted the one branch of the 'Y' in the tree has been, yet the other branch of it was totally solid.
All in all, from the time it fell, to the time the city left (only leaving some leaves for Brian to sweep out of the neighbors parking area), less than an hour had passed. WOW!
I titled this posting "the tree had been my friend". The shade it had provided our house over the years, had been greatly appreciated! I fondly remember the numerous years of baby squirrels chatting at us through the living room window, from their home in the knot of the tree. I also fondly remember the mother goose who had built her nest in the broken off branch of the one part, one year. I don't remember what year that was, but I know I had posted about it... o:-p. The grown squirrels had still loved to jump from the branches of  the tree and loud with loud "Thumps" on the roof, directly above my bed, early in the morning, and then again numerous times through out the day. Very often, there would be at least two loud thumps and then a game of chase would begin.  The squirrels also loved to sit in the tree and watch my GRAND children play inside. The GRAND children liked going to the window and talking to the squirrels.
Wish it didn't take so long for a new tree to grow next to that spot!

"Pick an item, any item..."

The available items are plentiful. The desire to pick all of them, is present. But the gumption to do so is lagging a bit today.
What am I talking about? Picking an item off of our current "projects in works" list, to work further on today.  A sample of said list:
~ Back yard. Made major strides on that project last evening. To the point that it now REALLY looks like somebody needs to get out there and do something! And yes, I really did do a lot of the work myself. Took a few 'couple of minute sit breaks' when the inner shimming got going too strong. Next step is to borrow a pick up truck to haul all of the cut brush away. Then purchase some chlorine bleach to put on the fresh cuts of the base of the plants we want to finish dieing off. I might be able to conquer those things. The leveling of the one area, the hauling of the scrap metal out of another area, etc. will have to wait for the guys to get to after our upcoming vacation weekend.

~ Kitchen. Made wonderful progress on that one yesterday afternoon! Still have to reorganize the pantry. Catch up the family white board calender and mop the kitchen. Could conquer that today.

~ Cleaning out / sorting through the upstairs 'cram it all room'. I've conquered almost 1/4 of it this week. Have to have it done before the 22nd when the GRAND kids come back, seeings how that is now going to be their room. Byron ended up moving back in again and is now in what was their room.

~ The laundry room. Enough said. LOADS to do down there. (pun intended ;-p)

~ Finish sorting through the rest of the attic box's stacked around the perimeter of the dining room.

~ Paperwork. Sorting through the piles of it. Filing away what needs filed. Shredding what needs shredded. Recycling what I don't need to keep. Needs done! Causes tired vertigo eye syndrome.

~ The front porch. What a project that has turned out to be. Next step is to scrape one end of the porch ceiling. Paint the porch. Put up the new porch light. Make new cushions for one of the porch settees. ...

~ The den. Oh Mercy!

I won't go on. You get the idea. Everywhere I look, there is a project in process that needs further action taken on it. We didn't intentionally start this many projects at the same time. 'Life' happens. On a regular, unschedualble basis!

Spring, wherefore art thou?

In the local news cast Friday night (11:00 news) the weatherman stated that while it was currently rainy and cold, come Sunday the weather would change and the temps would jump to 60 degrees. Epic fail weather man!
This is the current (Sun. April 14, 2013, 12:44 pm) scene out my kitchen window* -

notice the white flakes in the air. Notice them accumulating on items in the yard. [*I left all of the other curtains and drapes in the house closed, if I can't see it, maybe it'll stop misbehaving. :-p] I am sitting here with a blanket wrapped around my lower half and double layers on my upper half.
I had chuckled when I came across this, that Patty Dor. had posted on Facebook. I had then pinned it to my 'Michigan' board on pinterest.

I think I need to go take a slow leisurely stroll through my 'Spring' board. And after lunch I'm going to work on a spring themed wreath.

Spring is a com-min! :-D

As I looked out the window above the kitchen sink one day last week, I saw something which gave me hope that Spring really was on the way. I had to have a picture of it! Quickly I grabbed the camera, zoomed in and snapped, hoping that it would turn out, even though I was taking it from inside the house, through the window and screen.
I was both amazed and thrilled with how good it turned out. (Thank-you Lord!)

                                                                        [709]
I was glad I took the picture when I did, because two hours later, when I stopped to look again, there were no traces of it what-so-ever.
   Spring is a com-min! :-D

Smiles amongst 'details'

Some of you might remember way back HERE, when I told you about getting our new trash and recycling carts. Recently, we had received notification that the city was 'upgrading' their cart program. They were completely doing away with the city garbage bags. EVERY body is suppose to call and request a rolling bin. Yes, each sized bin still has a different cost to it, but instead of paying for service a year in advance, you 'pay as you dump'. Which is kind of false, seeings how you have to go on line and put money on your account, before they will start dumping your cart.  Any-ways, if you don't put your cart out to get dumped one week, you won't be charged for service that week. So in the winter, when smells will be frozen, if the cart's only half full, we won't bother wrestling it through the piles of white precipitation stuff, to get it out that week.
When we were notified about the coming of this change, it said that those who already have carts, will be receiving a letter containing their new account number and pass word. I kept an eye out for it, but it never arrived. Then last week, our emptied trash bin had an orange 'flyer' sticking out of it, stating that if we did not activate our account, they would no longer be dumping our cart. The 'flyer' gave both an on line address and a phone number.
I tried the online address first. Couldn't activate anything. Bother! So I dialed the phone number. The recording asked me to please hold, and let me know that I was "position number 24 in cue". Then the music started. Then the recording came back with an update on my position. Sometimes it seemed I was moving forwards. Other times, nothing had changed. "But if I hang up, it will be this way the next time I try too" I told myself.
Deep breath. 'I can be on hold and still browse pinterest...'  O:-D
Once I was connected to a human, he answered my comment about how busy they must be, by telling me they had moved 9 people into the phone bank. Thankfully, he was a very nice, even humerus man. And he tried ever so hard, but he couldn't access our account either! He tried via our address. He tried via our name. He had me walk outside and read the code off of our cart to him. That didn't help at all. He said that he couldn't find any history of cart pick up at that address of that street. I suggested that maybe it's under this other street name. "Which street do you live on?!?" he asked. 'The first one, but our trash is picked up in the alley, which runs next to our house and the alley has a street name'. "Oh". "Nope, not finding it listed on there either". "This is most befuddling". I agreed!
He let me go, reassuring me that he would make sure this was looked into, that he would call back if they had any further questions, and they would let me know when it was all sorted out so I could again try accessing my account. "Thank-you". "No, thank-you for being patient and even fun to talk to" he replied. I smiled.
That day I felt like one of my sons. I never left a room with out taking the phone with me. But they never called. They didn't call the next day either, which was a Friday. 'Okay then... we'll see if this gets straightened out before next trash day' I told myself.
I found this message in my email inbox when I got on line Sat. evening -
"Hi—

I just wanted to let you know that we will be sending you a new refuse cart in the next 3 business days because the cart that you currently have is not ready for the new Pay as You Throw Program.  We will be picking up your old cart on a service day sometime after that.  If you could please have your old cart empty and out on the curb on your service days that would help us a lot.  Thanks so much and let us know if you have any questions."  It had been sent by a lady. Well, he did pass the information on and it did get handled', 'Thank-you' I mentally said.
Then I got to thinking about it. 'I really should send them a thank-you reply'. So I did. This is what I sent -
"Hi        :->
Thank-you for looking into and rectifying our situation! We shall be watching for the arrival of our new cart, then transfer our trash into it and put the old cart out on trash days to be picked up. Kind of sad, I found that old cart to be such an aid(!).. I so enjoyed being able to just fill it up when I went on one of my cleaning sprees. It's almost like letting go of a beloved toy of my adulthood...
chuckling...
    Thanks again!!!
Cheryl B.

At 8:00 a.m. Monday morning, she sent this back -
"Too funny! Have a great week!"

'Lord, thank-you for prompting me to start her week with a smile'.

the epidemy of greed? ;-p

Over the years, lots of our friends have made comments to the effect, "you guys life is never boring, is it?". Every time we have replied, "Nope. That's one thing it's not. Crazy? Yes. Boring? Nope."
Well, it seems that even the catching of mice, in our mouse traps, fits in. Who would have thought? ;-b
Back HERE, I told you about how we use chocolate chips as bait in our traps. And then in THIS one, I both told you about and showed you, how we'd caught two mice, in the same trap,  at  the  same  time!
We now have another humorous mouse catching story to share with you. Both in word and in picture.
Brian calls this one "a true example of greed".
[Reminder - you can click on the picture itself to see it larger / clearer]

Yup. The mouse was carrying a french fry (which was longer than it's own body size!!), but instead of circumventing the trap (which there was room for it to do), it just had to take a nibble of the chocolate.
     Busted! Literally!  (bad pun?  o;-p)

We keep catchin' them

HEADS UP - This posting is not for the squeamish.

Back in THIS posting, I had mentioned how workmen had been working on the inside of our neighbors house all of that week. I also mentioned that they seemed to now be starting work on the outside of the place.
In THIS posting, I had made these comments, "During all of the work over there, the workers put new siding on the garage. We think that might be where all of our mice came from. A couple of weeks ago they had had the garage roofed. Now it's sided"
And in THIS posting, I had said, "One afternoon about two weeks ago, Benson and I were sitting in the living room watching something, when we spotted something shoot past under one living room window, and disappear behind the old radio. All my vertigo eyes saw, was a gray blur. Benson's eyes saw that it was a mouse. "Oh Great!" Been there, had those before. Thankfully, not very often in this house, but extremely frequently in one of our previous homes."
I had then gone on to tell about our challenge in finding the type of mouse raps we prefer, as well as baiting tips.
W-e-l-l, the traps worked! We just couldn't believe how many we caught and how fast. Eighteen  in that first week, with only having two traps constantly set, emptied, and reset! Goodness!
Our deductions of the situation came up with this probable scenario. First, the one set of workers had stripped off and then re-roofed the neighbors garage. Then it started raining. Like crazy! Day, after day, after day. Then the second set of workers started siding that garage. During all of the pounding on the garage, the mice whom had previously taken up occupancy in the garage, had decided to exit stage left. But they exited into rain. And mice are NOT fans of rain. And seeings how the neighbors garage is located in closer proximity to our house than our garage is, they searched for and found a way into our house. ALL of them moved in, totally ignoring the party invitation we had posted HERE. (insert eye roll here).
So like I said, we caught eighteen (18) mice in that first week alone. One catch actually being a "two for one deal". We caught two (2) mice at the same time, thus only costing us one (1) chocolate chip. ;-p

(Hey, I could have shown you much clearer pictures of them! o;-p)

Since then, we have caught about another half dozen mice. We are going to go seach the exterior of our house (possibly with a microscope) and see if we can find the trail of where and how they are getting in!!!  Once we do, we shall fill the spot with steel wool. See, critters can't chew their way through steel wool, due to what it does to the inside of their mouths.

One more thing, do you remember how I told you to load the traps with chocolate chips, and how very seldom they are able to eat all of it, without the trap going off? Well, "Murphy" saw that I had written that and made sure the mice proved me wrong. However, it's been so muggy here lately, that the chocolate chips squish in to the traps when I try to put them in, and the mice don't seem as cape able of getting away with stealing my chocolate chips unharmed. ;-D

Raising kids

As I was signing on to the computer this morning, one of Yahoo's(R) leading news stories, was titled 'The no-kids allowed movement is spreading'. I was curious. A conversation from a couple of years ago came to mind. A friend in her thirties had gotten married, and was telling about their honeymoon. They had chosen a 'kid-free' resort to go to. Was this news feature about those type of places? I went to the article to find out.
The article (written by Piper Weiss) started out with, "What's the matter with kids today? Doesn't anybody want them around?"

(I found this picture on line HERE)

Mentally I answered, 'the problem with kids today, is that most parents aren't interested in earning their "mean parent awards" '.  And of course, as my brain does, examples came to mind.
The time a couple of months ago, when we were trying to leave a local restaurant, but we had stopped due to a mom up ahead having troubles trying to get the promised candy out of the candy machine. We saw no problem in waiting. But the group behind us did. To the point that they started pressuring our backs. And then two, about twelve year old girls, started trying to squeeze around and out in front of us, and my vertigo was NOT doing good, and they were coming at me from all angles.... but then their mother pushed her way to the front defending them  (they had said "excuse me" - twice even!) and telling us we couldn't speak to her children ...  Yes, I WAS wearing my neck brace when all of this went down.
The time several months back, when Brain and I had stopped for dinner (and to give my vertigo a break from traveling) at a branch of a chain of restaurants we like. There was a dad at a table, with his son, who at least size wise, appeared to be around 5 or 6 years old. But for the amount of noise coming from that table, you expected to see a large size family sitting there, not a single child! And the things that child was getting away with saying to his dad. Oh. My. Word.
An elderly couple and their obviously special needs adult son, sat at a table between us and the dad with his young son. Numerous times, the young son would say something which made Brian and I cringe, and then the adult son of the other couple would declare, "That's not right. That's just not right!" While shaking his head and wearing a most distraught expression on his face. His poor parents would try to soothe him, and he'd settle down some, shooting questioning looks at the other table, until the young son would do something bad again and the scenario would repeat itself.
After a bit, the young son and his dad left, amidst much howling, and dragging, and quite the scene. And we were saddened by the mess the two had left behind. Goodness. The wait staff even had to move the chairs under the tables behind and in front of them to sweep all of the mess up off of the floor.
Or the time last week that Amie took me to a mission store, trying to get myself some shorts to fit the size I have expanded to. I "of course" (o;-p) went over to the kids clothing section first. There, we had troubles navigating around two young girls, maybe four and five years old? They were having great fun showing each other items off of racks. Off the kids racks. The nearby women's racks. And then sticking items back in where the next item caught their eye. They wandered off after a bit and we were relieved. Only to have them almost plow me over a minute later, as they rounded a corner on a bike the store had for sale. And on it continued.
We had left the store with relief. Only to groan inside when after a bit, they too entered the next store - which was several miles away. And one of the daughters was all excited to see us again - she recognized my neck brace. Where were their parents - well... never mind.

    But back to the article.
It seems resorts are not the only ones whom are either entirely banning young children, or at the least, making designated "no children" hours. The article also listed airlines, grocery stores, movie theaters, and restaurants, etc.. In-fact, there is a web site you can go to, to find participating places at. It's name? LeaveThemBehind.
The article asks, "When did kids become the equivalent of second-hand smoke? Blame a wave of childless adults with money to spend. ..."
Personally, I truly believe that that is only part of the answer. ALL adults like to go out to eat, or see a movie, or spend the night away, with out having to hear and quietly put up with somebody else's children's tantrums. If you left your own kids to home, your trying to escape for goodness sake!
Now, for the record - I am referring to children whom makes scenes, etc. and their parents do little, to nothing, about it. I know all to well, that you start out saying "MY child will NEVER behave like THAT!" only to have your child seem to try their best to do just exactly what you proclaimed they wouldn't. (insert head smack here 8-/). And from what I've gathered, it's a-l-w-a-y-s worked that away. To the frustration (and sometimes horror) of many generations of parents. And it probably always will.
The big point is (and it's a extraordinarily HUGE point!), what is you (the parents) response when they do? Do you even bother to respond? Do you back up the words which come out of your mouth? Have your children learned from experience that your serious? And that they best be too!?! OR, are those around you at the time made to suffer, due to your lack of back bone?
But to the parents whom DO take action, we feel sympathy. And comoderody. And we shoot encouraging smiles. And while we might not appreciate their child's antics - we understand, and thus are willing to 'suffer' a bit.
(I found this illustration on line HERE)

As you know, I love witnessing God's amazing sense of timing and displays of irony and humor in our lives. It happened again this morning. About all of this.
After browsing through my email in-box, I ventured over to Facebook(R).  As I was scrolling down the page listing things friends had posted, I came across one my friend (our previous neighbor) Sara DeWaard Fazio had written/started. She had written something, which others had added to.
The irony part came in, with how what she had written had to do with things she planned on doing for their two (currently) young daughters, which would most definitely end up earning her "mean mom" awards! And while I have not got to witness her interactions with her kids (they moved out before they had them), I have read enough of the other things she has posted over time to know she's headed the right direction.
The humor of God's timing played in, with how I found the news article and Sara's posting, the exact same morning.

Sara had written - "Dear daughters, I make this solemn oath to you: I will never borrow your clothes, your boyfriends, or your belly button rings. We will not get matching tattoos for your 16th birthday (or 21st for that matter). Any underwear I buy you will come in 3 packs. You will beg me to drop you off a block from school and your lunches will have embarrassing notes from me on the napkins. So help me God. Love, Mom."

Sara's friend Jennifer V. B. wrote - "Love it. I'll add to it.. I'll never buy you or your friends beer and I'll never keep any of your secrets from your daddy."

Sara had replied, "Oh, good ones! And I will never allow you and your friends to booze it up at our house, even if everyone promises to give me their keys."

In part of Sara's friend Carrie P.'s comment, she had written, "As the mother of a son, I'll add this promise: I will never try to pick up any of your friends."

My comment had contained this suggested add on: "I promise to always give you curfews. And to enforce them. And should you choose to break them, they will in turn be moved a half hour earlier."

Sara's friend Aras M. had commented, "Love this!! To bad this is a rare post. Wish there were more mom's that think this way."

Carrie P. had added another comment, "I won't let you have 'sleepovers' with your boyfriend/girlfriend in high school (or God forbid, sooner.)."

I did ask for and was granted Sara's permission to use this material.

Children use to be considered a blessing. Challenging blessings, to be sure. But blessings never the less. And they were much smiled upon members of communities.

The article had ended with this question, "Are parents in danger of becoming second-class citizens?"

If more of them don't start finding and using their back bones, like Sara and her friends have, it's not only going to be the childless couples pushing it that away. It will end up that no-body wants to be by other peoples kids. Period. Take pride in enforcing 'the rules' to your kids. Of teaching them manners. And respect for others. And others properties. Earn those "mean parent" awards!!
(found the award on line HERE)

truths about friendships

I found these quotes on two different blogs-

"Sometimes we expect more from others
because we would be wiling to do that much for them".
                                     (nostalgicbliss / tumblr)

I found it HERE.  She had found it HERE.

"If someone wants to be a part of your life,
They'll make an effort to be in it.
So don't bother reserving a space in your heart for someone
who doesn't make an effort to stay."

    I found it HERE.

Personally, I think that sometimes the challenges we perceive in friendships, which make us feel the second quote, are based on the first quote.

Retiree's prove they can swing!

Back HERE we had posted a link to a lib-dub thingy, which had been filmed in Grand Rapids. It went national.
Well, another one has been done in our city. This time, it was filmed at and performed by, the residents of one of our retirement communities.
It looks like they had a blast doing it! What fun!

Unfathomable ....

My heart lurched at 3:15 (a.m.) this morning, when my ears heard the sound of a single lone car, zooming down the main street we are so close to. The antennas in my ears shot to full height and started scanning the air waves, questioning, were sirens going to be coming into hearing range too? The mind questioned, had there really been a lady with him in the vehicle early on in the craziness, and the car I had just heard, was her, trying now to make her own escape from our police force? Had the whole unfathomable chain of events, taken on a whole new twist, thus meaning that what all of us had thought was an end to the horrifying madness, ending around midnight, hadn't been after all?
But my ears could not dtect another sound. There didn't seem to be any other cars on the roads at all. While that in itself was not common, my heart relaxed. Everybody and anybody around here had gone to bed, too emotionally drained from what all did happen, to do anything but that for now.
Tomarrow we would try to come to grips with what had happened. Tomarrow the authroities would be doing debriefings up the wazoo, while the investigations continued, and the 'paper work' started piling, and the community at large talked over again and again the unfathomableness of all of it.
But during those wee morning hours, we were exhausted, in oh so many ways. Our brains could no longer strive to make sense of all the horribleness that had happened. All systems had chosen to take the shut down coping method, for now.

It is now morning. It is the 'tomarrow'. One of the leading Yahoo(R) headlines when I signed on to the computer, was about all of the happenings around here yesterday. While Brian and I had continued to watch the local TV stations coverage of all of it last night, Benson and Brent had gone to the basement. They had come up from time to time, to tell us they were listening to the police scanner via the internet, that the event was being carried by national as well as CNN(R) news, that Facebook(R) was past a buzz with all of it, etc..
The real irony to me, was that yesterday morning I had read several peoples comments, questioning when all of the attention was going to turn away from the young mom in Florida, who had just been acquitted of killing her young daughter. They were all saying they were tired of hearing about all of that. There answer came. In a way none of us would have imagined. In a way that all of us truly wish it hadn't. On so many levels.
Ever so often, after some type of horrific thing happens someplace, you hear somebody tell a reporter that they can't believe this happened "here". Somebody told one of our reporters exactly that yesterday. And all of us in the community are in total agreement. What happened was the type of stuff writers make up for movie scripts, right?! And they have been filming movies around here the last couple of years....
But none of it was footage for some movie, although we know that a lot of the footage of the police chasing the suspect, will most likely end up on one of those extreme car chases shows. But we're not proud of that. None of yesterday's happenings are the type that we want bringing attention to our city and community. This is not what we want to be known for!!!
We're proud of hosting a 10K race which is big enough, it's one of the races contestants can use to qualify for the Boston Marathon.  We don't mind all of the people traveling to tour the Fredrick Meijer Gardens, or to see our fish ladder (or to try and catch the fish which yearly try to jump up it during their spring migration), or yearly art prize competition, or visit the Gerald R. Ford Museum, amongst other great things we as a city and community host, in one form or another.
But to be known for having one of our citizens having murdered a total of seven people, three at one house, four at another, two of them reportedly children? No, we do not want to be known for that!
Nor do we want to be known for his high speed chase, which covered so-o much of our city. Through city streets. Not only hitting, but also repeatedly shooting at a police car. One of his bullets hitting a women in a nearby vehicle. His continually firing of bullets, evidenced in the ground and buildings all over his wild course downtown, but miraculously not hitting anybody else. (Thank-you Lord!)
He had fired at and hit somebody else a bit earlier on the day. It was a case of road rage. But miraculously, he hit the victim just right in the nose, so that the plate the victim had in his nose, from an earlier in life brush with cancer, had deflected the bullet. Miraculous! (Thank-you Lord!!)
But then he had left the city streets and gone up on the highway. The definitely busy highway! With what, twenty police cars in pursuit? Let me tell you, they were in high speed, HOT pursuit. They had been booking it so fast, that when they had passed on the area of the nearby main street, where we could see them pass, all we saw was a blur. Seriously!! We could hear the screaming sirens flying by, but all we could see of the cars, were a blur. We 'think' they were either city or state cars, because it was a dark colored blur, and the county's cars are white locally. All we can tell you for sure, is they were after him, and speed was 'full throttle open!'.
We could hear all of the sirens from the highway. We had been hearing sirens for hours. Our "What the heck's going on?" had changed to "Oh. My. Gosh!".
We were watching the chase on TV. But then, then, when the driver of the car being chased did the unthinkable, and crossed over the medium into on coming traffic... we literally lunged forward in our seats. My arms were covered in a double layer of goose bumps. Suddenly I realized that one of my hands was covering my mouth. With out realizing I had done so, I had stopped the exclamations and shocks coming out of my own mouth, so that I could concentrate on what the highway traffic cameras were streaming to the local TV stations. And my heart and mind had also started sending up pleading prayers for every single person who ever so innocently, were in one of those cars heading the correct direction, while this driver, who obviously was not in his right mind, was now leading a few of the police vehicles in a high speed chase the wrong direction down the local highway.
But God did more of his miraculous intervening and not only did the wild driver not hit anybody, all of the other drivers managed to avoid getting in even a single pile up themselves. (Thank-you Lord!!!)
The get away car had had smoke pouring out behind it. Was it due to the fact that the police had effectively shot out three of his four tires? Was something else on the car going, due to the continued high speeds he was driving? All of the possibilities were being questioned. Not only by the media, but by all of us watching the scenes unfold via their cameras as well. This wasn't a movie, it was reality. But like in movies, was his car going to burst into fire as well? Is that really possible? Our questioning continued.
And then something happened and he went off of the highway into a ditch. And before we could double blink, he was out of the car and on foot. The horror factor rose yet again. Do we currently know anybody who's living in that area? We knew Brandon did ... Our prayers were now for all of the people living in that area. ALL of them, including the ones Brandon knows.
And our prayers for the police force(s) continued. There were city police cars in abundance. And there were state police cars. That's not that unusual, seeings how they have a couple close by stations. But there were so-o many of them. AND there were county cars. Again, in abundance. And the media was telling us how nearby citys had offered to lend officers, to cover any other things that were happening elsewhere in our city, which the police usuallly need to respond to.
But there weren't only officers on the ground. They were in the air as well.
And not only were the two legged human officers involved, they had the four legged canine unit in chase as well. Only minutes after he fled his car, they had the dogs in pursuit.
And then the report came that our newest fears in this nightmare had actually happened. The guy the police had been chasing, had broken into a nearby home, and yes, there had been people in the house and he now had hostages. Out stomach's and hearts sunk. He 'reportedly' had already shot and killed seven people THAT day, would he add more to the total? "Oh Lord..." our prayers continued.
And we waited. And we prayed. And our nerves jumped when the police pushed the media back, yet again, even further. "What's really going on down that street?"
And we felt for the news reporters, whom kept endlessly recovering the same material. And yet we knew they didn't dare return to their regularly scheduled programing. They'd tried that earlier in the day, only to keep breaking in with updates. And new twists on the events. And new events as he continued to rage on, out of control.
And then we felt for the chief of police (I think that's the right title/position), as he came out to give us, via the media, updates. So much had happened. So many things. It would be hard to make a report on one shooting scene with fatalities. There had been two scenes. With fatalities at both. Multiple fatalities at both. And two others had gun shot injuries. And then there had been the high speed chase, which had covered how many miles? And done how many absurd things?  And now there were hostages involved. Our prayers included him - the chief of police (or whatever his proper title is).
After awhile, the chief reported that one hostage had been released. We took a deep breath. Maybe the guy the police were after, would release all of his hostages - after all, he supposedly was connected in one way of another to the people he had shot (not at all implying that made it okay!!!), but he didn't know these people whom were now his hostages. "Lord, please let that make a difference!"
Then the word came that there were two more hostages still in the house. One was somebody who had stopped by to visit the home owners, not long before the 'suspect' (as they were referring to the man who had been driving the car) had broken his way into the home. Mercy!
The 'suspect' had demanded Gatorade. Brian commented about how long the guy had been on how high of an adrenaline rush?!?!! Theories were, that that wasn't the only kind of a high he was on.
And then the chief confirmed the reports that the 'suspect' had ended it by putting his gun to his own head and pulling the trigger. Yes, he had medically been declared dead. Yes, the other two suspects were okay. No, the police had not shot the 'suspect'. And no, no police officers had even been wounded in this line of duty. (Thank-you Lord!!!) And no, he couldn't comment on this or that earlier event, he hadn't yet been debriefed by the officers whom had been involved. And so-o much had happened in such a relatively short amount of time, that he was not yet ready or willing to go into any depth about any of the twists of the day.
We started truly breathing again. And thanking the Lord that the hostages, while most likely extremely emotionally damaged, hadn't also been physically hurt or even killed.
And this morning while I've been typing this, I keep hearing helicopters pass overhead. They don't have the sound of the med chopper. Is it more media which have arrived in our city, tying to show all of the areas involved? Is it our own officers, now on a calm basis, recording mileage the 'suspect' had covered, etc.? Perhaps taking the time to take areal shots of the proof left behind? The cars that had driven into the median to avoid the oncoming car, and left their tire tracks behind.
My prayers continue. For so-o many people. For the family, friends and neighbors of the slain victims. For the two people whom were shot. For every single police officer and support staff who were involved in all of it. There had to be at least a hundred total. "Help their frayed nerves Lord". For us, as a city and community. Help us to heal. Pull us closer together. Help us to be gracious to the ones whom descend to get "the scoop". Let them leave with a positive impression of us, the cities people. "And Lord, Thank-you, thank-you, thank-you, that this didn't end up totaling ever so many more injured or killed!!!"
And all of Grand Rapids said, "AMEN!!!"

Sometimes 'The Circle' is just too obvious!

Sir Elton John had been commissioned to write and sing the song 'Circle of Life' for Disney's(R) movie 'The Lion King'(R). While the song itself is a beautiful song, and we all know about how 'the circle' works, sometimes..., yeah, sometimes the reality of it, is just too obvious in the world around us. Too too obvious!
Unlike boxes, where there are different sides, circles keep on flowing, round and round and round.
And it doesn't always flow smoothly. It's more like a large stream. Sometimes the rains of life make it run high and overflow it's banks. Sometimes rocks collect together in it, thereby making rapids in it. And yet at other times, it's waters do flow so calm and smoothly that it's hard to believe it can be the same stream.
'The circle of life' works quite similar to how our round world rotates. Sometimes the area we live in has rotated to where we are seeing the sun. But at other times, it is very obvious that our area has rotated away from the sun and is back in the moons area.

In the movie, the song starts with the birth of the baby. Those times in life are usually times when the stream is flowing along smoothly. When we have rotated into the realm of the sun. And we consider life "good".
                                                    Found on line HERE.

I know of two very recent births. The parents, grand parents, relatives, and friends, all felt that the sun was indeed shining and life was "good!"
I know of several couples whom will be giving birth anywhere's from with in the next two weeks, to the next eight months. So far, the streams have had only minimal rapids in them (morning sickness) and things are brightening up. Again, life is "good".

In the movie, the baby grows up. But along the way, it's father dies. This too is part of 'the circle of life'. During those times in life, it is more like the skies have opened up in non-ending storms, flooding our cope-ability banks. We are trying hard to stay afloat, but the amount of rapids we keep encountering, are more like mountains. We are well aware that we have rotated away from the sun, and sometimes we wonder if even the moon will ever shine again. During those times, we struggle to give lip service to the idea that life is "good".
In our hearts, we know it is. In our hearts, we know that 'this too shall pass'. In our hearts....  But our hearts are just so-o heavy. And we know that it's not the sky raining and filling those streams. No, the truth of the matter is, it's our own tears. And just when we think that we've gained control, another rapid appears and the flooding starts again. "Some-day". Some-day we will again be able to more honestly say that life is "good".
                                           Found on line HERE

I have a cyber friend whom recently lost her husband. Totally unexpectedly. Totally and ever so quickly, rotating her world away from the sunshine they had shared for twenty five years. Her heart is heavy indeed. The rivers keep rising. And she can't help it. The glimpse of his glasses sitting on the magazine he had been reading, are now very rough rapids. And we her friends, weep with and for her. "Lord, let her see sunshine again" we plead on her behalf.
Very recently a friend got the news that they had pulled the life support from her teenage grandson, who lived in a different state. Her mind hadn't yet come to grips with the reality that something dreadful had suddenly happened and he was even on life support. He was only a teenager! And now the dam finished breaking. He is gone. The skies went from suddenly very overcast, to unfathomably dark. Her grandmotherly heart is so so heavy. As are our hearts for her. And those whom are hers. "Lord, let them see sunshine again" we plead on their behalf.
I have two dear friends whom very recently had doctors tell a close relative of theirs, that there is nothing more medically that can be done for them. The doctors then told the families, "we'll try to keep them as comfortable as possible...".
For one friend, it was her brother. For the other friend, it is his dad.
The bother had been diagnosed with cancer before. But they had beat it! They had rotated to darkness and back again. But this time, it's not only back, it's won. They were again rotated back to the darkness. And this time, it seems even darker. Because this time, their holding out hope has been yanked away from them. This time, the rapids have been increased, he had only just become a grandpa, for the very first time. Yes, they have time to say their good-byes. And they know it's best. But they don't want to. Plain and simple.
The other friends dad has had problems before. But this time, the dialyzes were more than his body could handle. This time, their hope too was yanked away.  Yes, he is older, but not THAT old! They try to keep the rain tears away when they are around him. But he knows. And so do they.
In both cases, our beseeching prayer on their behalf is, "Lord, help them to turn to you for their strength. They can't humanly get through this on their own. Lord, let them feel your arms around them."

For those of us saying these beseeching prayers, "the circle" is just too obvious!!! We know better than to step back far enough not to be able to see it clearly, because our friends need us! Both sets. The ones need us to rejoice with them. "It means so much...." The others need our encouragement and love to help them through this...."don't forget about me....".

Another "circle" song comes to mind.... o/~ "Will the circle, be unbroken, by and by Lord, by and by...." o/~

And then another, made popular by Tommy Rowe.  o/~ "I'm so dizzy, my head is spinning, like a whirlpool never quite ending....." o/~  But it's not a "girl" making it spin. It's "the circle of life". And coping with 'the circle' is challenging!

this isn't going right ....

Recently I read a posting another blogger had written. The name of the posting was '10 Things I Hate About Your Blog'. The name of the blog the posting was on is 'Hope Studios', and the blog owners name is Jennifer. Jennifer made some very valid points in her posting. This is the comment I had left her:
   "Hi Jennifer :-)
Thanks for being brave (bold?) enough to say some of the ten things out loud. ;-)
I stumbled upon your blog due to you hosting a 'theme day' and a project I am currently (or should that be again?) working on. You'll get more info about that later. o:->
   I STRONGLY agree with points 3, 4 and 5.
Personally, I'm working on being better about #8.
And then there is #10. The reason that this one bothers me so, could be due to me being an organized person at heart. I word it that way, due to having four sons and a husband who are not - thus my home does not always show full proof of my hearts ways. ;-p
Like others mentioned, buttons galore and mass amounts of advertising frustrate me. The old "K.I.S.S." always comes to mind - "Keep It Simple Stupid" (or for us stupids - either way.)
Two challenges I found while browsing your site -
1- I could NOT find a way to directly contact you via email (this too pertains to what I'm working on with 'theme days').
2 - You have no easy way to return to your 'home' page. Or at least, not that I found. It definitely could be this users error...
For those other commenter's who commented about 'grammar errors'. While I totally get their point, I beg them to not hate those of us who try ever so hard, but sadly disappointed their mother's, who themselves were English majors. o:->
Okay Jen, I am going to be brave and ask you to visit my blog. NO, I don't expect you to want to become a 'follower'. ;-p Nor do I have any 'give-a-way's' going on. Sorry. But I would like for your honest opinion on what you find there. Like I said, my requesting this is a brave step for me. ...
Thanks for at least considering my request,"

She did. And she sent me the changes she recommended. I thought them over and then sent this to some of my friends,
Title: "requesting YOUR in put as well (please!)"
Note: "At the bottom is the comment I left on a posting this blogger did titled "10 things I hate about your blog".   I then got brave(?) and requested that she critique ours. She did.  I am now asking for your in put. both about our blog. And about what she had to say. Why? Because you are a regular visitor to our blog, while she was probably a one time stopper-byer. So I'd like to weigh her in put against yours.
  Thanks!
  Cheryl B.
The Bz House That Love Built"

Four of the friends I sent it to, did reply yesterday.
So I did some more thinking.
Then I decided to be brave and go make some changes on our blog.
Let me just say that that is turning out to have sounded much easier than it's working out to be. MERCY!!!
I helped Byron set this site up in the first place.
Every time it has been 'redecorated', I have been the one to do it.
But can I currently get it a way that I am happy with?  Nope!  Wish they had a 'go back button'. I did like the way it was. .... Just thought I could tweak it here and there and improve it a tish ... (insert eye roll here).
So, I am going to be spending some time working on the overall appearance of our blog today, instead of down loading pictures from Analyse's 2nd birthday party and figuring out which part of it I am going to post about first. 8-/.
Yes, I'm grumbling. Sorry. But thought I should warn you that if your visiting our blog today, do NOT base your decision on our blog on what you see here today, cuz it's highly likely it will be changed before I've reached the 'satisfied stage' again.  Thanks!

a party invitation of sorts ... o;-p

We would like to extend an invitation to all spiders
and any other creeping or crawling critters,
whom are currently residing a-n-y-where in our home;
to the wondrous swirling party
still being held in the 'comode' of our bathroom.

Yes, this invitation is open to ALL spiders
whom are currently living in our home.
The little black jumpy ones,
the ones with the opulent color,
who almost match the color of our walls,
the long legged type and the short legged type.

It is also open to any and all other types of critters
who are not a part of the spider family.

And yes, flying insects, you too are welcome to come.
In-fact, we'd like to encourage you to do so!

We admit that this party has already been going on for awhile.
LOTS of your friends and family members
have already been escorted to it,
by one of our family members.
But we continue to find more and more of you
(on an all to frequent basis)
who have not yet joined the party,
and we thought perhaps the reason was
due to not having heard about it yet.
Therefore, we thought we'd use this method of notifying you.

We're sure that you will now hear,
seeings how we have found some of you
on the cord running into the side of the computer,
and even one on the keyboard.

As previously mentioned,
this invitation is for a wondrous swirling party.
We know that all of you like adventurous activities,
because we have observed you swinging
from one spot to another via your webs,
or buzzing our heads (if your the flying sort),
or dashing across the counter or desk top.
Thus we knew that you would want the party we host for you,
to not be the dull, boring, sitting around doing nothing, type.
We promise, it isn't!

For those of you whom aren't totally sure
which thing in our bathroom is the 'commode',
we  are only to happy to clarify things for you.

It is NOT the basket with all of the smelly clothing in it.

It is NOT the oblong thing with the blue curtain
hanging on one side of it.

NOR is it the bowl like thing,
which sits on a tall stand.

It is the thing sitting rather in a corner,
next to the window.

Just in case your still not sure,
we are including a picture of a 'commode'.
We know that some are 'visual learners',
and we REALLY do not want any of you still hanging around,
due to not being sure
exactly where the party is,
and thus miss being able to join it yourself. ;->

Yes, you are welcome to 'drop in' any 'ole time.
The sooner the better!
As we said, a LOT of your friends have already.

And no, please do not wait for one of us to personally escort you.
We will not be offended if you go on your own.
In-fact, it would lighten things up for us considerably!

Happy partying!
